I went and saw Michael today I think it was his second or third rehab stint. He looked good. Its hard to watch sometimes because he was working on simple things like holding a spoon, picking up small blocks. Things we take for granted. It was very encouraging. He has a great attitude. there were a couple of times i would of threw in the towel but he persavered through the challenges. He is a tough kid.

Mike, I saw it with my own eyes. You were definitely moving your legs from side to side. I could see those thigh muscles working. Every day I see you make a step in the right direction. I believe in a positive outcome, and I believe in you. You have held your head up high through this, and your strength has given me strength. I love you with all my heart.

I have never been so proud of anyone as I am with you. Bragging about my nephews has always been easy. These are huge accomplishments! You don't need to be told to keep it up or work hard, because you are doing it!! You can't lose with such a positive attitude. Take care and we'll see you soon! Well, Mike, it's now 7:18 p.m. California time which means it's 10:18 p.m. NY time. As much as I think of you and pray for you during the day, I double up at nite. After a full day with all your family and friends around, I know you must be tired and I also imagine it must be hard to see everyone leave at nite. You know they would stay if they could. One of these days you will be walking out that door with them, but for now you are where you need to be.

Please know that when they leave, you are never alone. The Lord is holding you in his loving arms each nite as you sleep and heal and He's brought his host of angels with him! So sleep well and sweet dreams, dear one!
God Bless You...and dream of butterflies!

Mike, I've been thinking about you all morning! I've got a quote from someone whom I think alot of : Somehow I can't believe that there are heights that can't be scaled by a man who knows the secrets of making dreams come true. This special secret, it seems to me, can be summerized in five C's they are: Curiousity, Confidence, Courage, and Constancy, and the greatest of all is Confidence. When you believe in a thing, believe in it all the way, implicity and unquestionably.

Guess what, the next song was Stand by Rascal Flatts. I paid attention to the words for the first time and thought this is totally your song. It is about the accomplishments you have made so far and the ones you are going to do in the future. I feel confident. I love you. I always want you to know and remember how much we love and care for you- you are constantly in our thoughts and prayers each and every minute and us seeing you makes us have a better day-I hope we can only do the same for you! Remember, no one said this was going to be easy, but keep pushing ahead and everything will work out for the best. Hi, Mike...I have so enjoyed all the comments on Saturday nite! Wow...what can I say! Just wish I could've been there in person...I WAS there in my thoughts! It's just so awesome that I am speechless. I saw the channel 10 and 13 newscasts on the computer. You are so impressive and I am so in awe of the community that has come out for you. Makes my move to Rochester next year more welcomed. How loved you are and how loving they are!

I know Steve goes home tomorrow...a mixed blessing, huh? I can't wait to meet him someday, too. I have heard such nice things about him. You two have been a blessing to each other and I'm sure you have formed a bond that will never be broken. God Bless You Both!

Sleep well, Sweet Mike, and sweet dreams...Love, Josh and Nick's Gramma B

Michael, you were so funny last night. It's so uplifting to see your spirits so high. Although last night was TMI, (to much information), I don't need to hear all those things you boys talk about. Moms aren't suppose to hear those things from their sons. LOL. You are doing so well and we will be there to help in any way. Even if I have to make french toast every morning. Good Morning Michael, I just made GAK for the kids and I made you some too. I put beads and crystal stones in it. So as you progress you will be able to pull them out with your pinchers. For now you can practice squeezing it and it wont fall out of your hands. You will get so far, I just know it. Have a good day and I know you work hard. We are all proud of you. Love you, Patti xoxo

Hi Mike,

Just sending a blog your way so you know that I'm thinking of you. No "spazzzzzy energy" or bribery of presents like the 2 other Fants - just straight up good bloggin' cause that is what I'm about. Fant Kim buys lousy presents anyway so don't get all excited - sorry but I'm just keeping it real. She'll probably bring you back a shirt that says "I heart Myrtle beach" or "I went to Myrtle Beach and you didn't". She's beat. If she wanted to stay connected she could bring a lap top or go to a cybercafe so she could blog but I don't think that she is that creative as a Fant. Like I said Mike - dont get too excited about gifts from Myrtle.

I'll say it again..."stay strong the Mike Bliss Way" - I love ya and I'll blog you later...gotta go watch Grey's Anatomy.

The definition of perseverance!!
May 5th, 2008 by tclifford-rochester

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting a man last week that I will not soon forget. I received an e-mail from Mike Bliss’ grandma Lynn a couple of weeks ago. Mike was brutally attacked while leaving a bar in Buffalo in late March for the complete story, here’s the link: http://mikebliss.weebly.com/ . Mike is a loyal listener of WBEE’s and his Gram thought it might lift his spirits if one of us paid him a visit. Well she may have been right but in my opinion she had it backwards. I have to be honest, I was nervous, I knew I had an opportunity to maybe say or do something helpful but what can I say that will matter a hoot to a kid who is fighting to regain something that should have never been taken away from him. As I walked into the hospital my hands were sweating and my mind was racing, all I could think was “Just don’t babble Terry, don’t screw this up”.

As I walked into Mike’s room, there was an immediate peace and happiness that was palatable. Surrounded by a huge loving family sat a young man that is truly one in a million. Mike greeted me with a warm handshake that he has worked tirelessly for the past several weeks to be able to execute. His smile said it all. There sat the human definition of perseverance. He is a kind and loving individual and a true pleasure to meet and chat with.

Mike Bliss has every reason in the world to be a bitter angry vengeful young man. He was robbed of abilities that we take for granted everyday for no apparent reason. He is not… he looks to the future with hope and wonderment. He has accepted the challenges that lie ahead. He is a young man of great faith and determination.

As I left the hospital I realized that mine were the spirits that had been lifted. I was the lucky one last week to have the met the acquaintance of Mike Bliss and his wonderful family. I’ll ask one thing of you on his behalf. Pray fro Mike, however you start or end your day, whomever you put your belief in ask them to smile on Mike, give him a boost, he’ll do the rest. I believe with my whole heart and soul, Mike Bliss will walk out of Strong Memorial Hospital, maybe it will take some time but he’ll do it and we should all learn a lesson from it.

I'm blogging from work cause I can do that. I wonder where Fant Kim is? Probably at the tourist traps in Myrtle looking for a unique gift (back scratcher that says "My Fant went to Myrtle and this is all she got me") Start practicing now on how you are going to recieve her gifts - maybe she'll bring you some salt water taffy - that's pretty popular and tastes so doggone good. Good Luck with that one.

Fant Nik - What's her problem? I feel sorry for her everytime I read one of her blogs...poor dumb thing.

Hope you had a good day at home - I worked today 10-4...that's what I do on most sundays...for the past 4 years anyway. Not that you give a rip but I'm just blog blabbing. I hung out with Fant Nik last night. I guess that explains why I feel sightly less intelligent today - she can rub off on you so be careful not to hang out with her too much...or else...I don't know how else to say it but...ya get dumb. And she is one of the dumbest. Consider yourself warned. What about Fant Kim? Where is she? Oh yeah, she's in Myrtle Beach buying you "special gifts". Maybe it's a keychain that says "Mike" cause that's original or possibly a shark tooth necklace - now that's legit. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya.

I hope to see you soon -

Your best Fant,

Hi Mike:

Saw the picture of you standing -gotta love it! I see my sisters have been very busy trashing me while they know I haven't had access to the internet, but finally got the wireless to work in our condo today. Although Fant Karin's suggestions of back scratchers, salt water taffy, Mike key chains, etc. might be her idea of great gifts, I was thinking more of like a seashell magnet for the fridge (what 21-year-old doesn't love those? JK) She's just jealous cuz all she's getting is a pen I stole out of the desk drawer and maybe not even that. You have a great week, I know you're going to be running soon!!! Love, Favorite Fant Kim

Hi Mike,

I saw the picture before Fant Kim. Just so you know...and so she knows whats up. Kinda fancy staying in a condo in Myrtle - maybe you will get a nice gift after all- heres hoping...but keep practicing on loving whatever it is she brings. Fant Kim just proved how great her gifts are...what do I want with a pen she stole out of the desk drawer? Really now. She is also a clepto - just found out that my big sister is a THIEF. I'm telling on her - that's right Sissie Kim - I'm telling Mom - wait until you get home.

Next bit of advice for you...don't even read Fant Nik's blogs...it's gonna rub off on ya. I'm pretty sure she got a D in English all through highschool - the teachers were mighty generous with that D too. "She laughing out loud" - you tell me what is wrong with that sentence. Let me get out my red pen. Proofread Fant Nik, it only takes an extra second.

Hope you had a good day - I put my order in for a bracelet at Angelo's today.

Holla at ya later,

Hi Mike,

Remember the prayer group is praying for your recovery every Wednesday in May---7pm is your time. They have your picture and they say your name throughout the evening. By the end of May I plan to give them a good report on you. See you soon.

Hi Mike,

It was really awesome to see you while we were home. I cannot get over how amazing you are. Through this entire ordeal you have risen above any negativity and blossomed. You are such a strong person. My sister sent me a video of you moving your leg. I am so inspired by your strength and can't wait to see you walk!

You are a pretty amazing person.

I remember when you were so shy that you wouldn't eat with our family and I used try to guilt trip you about my grandma's waffles...Now, if I had just met you, shy would not be a word I would use to describe you. I am so impressed by the positivity that you exuded and am so proud to be able to say I know you.

I also just want to say that the dedication from all of your peers (especially your family) is incredible. Your Parents and Grandparents are so strong just like you and I'm o happy for you that you have such an amazing support system by your side on a daily basis.

You're amazing. Keep believing. I still wear my bracelet every day and will continue to. I believe in you 1000%

I will see you in a few weeks.

Love-

Jessy

Mike, I missed your great day in rehab today. Nanny said you worked so hard and it was your best PT yet. I don't know what we are going to do without Tim and Simon. They have been great. I hope the therapists at Clinton Crossings can measure up to them. It will be hard to make the change to someone new when you had the best already. We will sure miss everyone at Strong. It is definitely bittersweet to be leaving. I promise you Mike we are going to work hard at home with your rehab.

Morning Mike Bliss,

It's already wednesday - my goodness. I hope you have another really good day today in whatever you are doing but particularly in your rehab. I haven't been able to get my bracelet yet - stopped back yesterday again - instead of the bracelet I picked up a buffalo wrap and some potato wedges - the day before...a slice of pizza - I'm not eating any more of their food until I get my Bliss bracelet. I'm onto them.

I'm off to work now but I'll blog more later.

love ya,

Tomorrow is the day. Michael is coming home. As much as we want him home, we wish he could stay long enough to receive the therapy we think he needs to continue to progress. With the help of Mike's therapists, we learned a lot of things we can work with Mike at home. He will also go to an outpt rehab facility starting next week. Everyone will have to visit us here at our house. Just call first because rehab times and days change, so we don't know when he will be here and when he won't. Thanks for everyone's support. Fant Aunts, we haven't forgotten you. We still love you. We have just been crazy trying to get things ready at home and pack up all of Michael's cards at the hospital. It took two days to pack up all of his cards. We have bracelets for everyone too. We love and appreciate everyone's support. Please don't stop now that Michael is coming home.

Afterall, home is where the heart is and we all know just how much heart and spirit you have. Continue working hard and remember how much love and support you and your family have. Michael was a little discouraged today. He actually misses the hospital where he got three + hours of therapy. He enjoyed feeling like he put in a good workout. We did some work here at home, but his heart wasn't in it today. Tomorrow is another day. We did go out to the YMCA in Batavia to see a special bike they have that he can use. It uses electrodes to stimulate his muscles to pedal. They also had a standing table that he was able to use. He likes the standing table because it helps with his spasms.

Dear One...it saddens me to see that yesterday was such a hard day for you and your family...they love you so much and, as a parent, I know they feel your pain ten-fold! There is no other way to say it...this really SUCKS! BUT...it won't suck forever! Don't give up, keep going, and BELIEVE in all the miracles God has blessed you with so far and will continue to do. Don't be sad, get MAD and turn that anger into positive rehab.

Do you have meds for pain, Michael? If so, don't be afraid to take them...at least enough to dull the pain...doesn't mean your weak, maybe just smart!

I hear Adrianne made you some of her famous Chicken French today. She hasn't even made it for me, her ol' mom, so she must really love you! And Josh and Jenna are spending the nite with you? Man, I'd love to be there for that!

Well, my adopted kitty, Callie, is staring me down and I think she is trying to tell me she wants some more to eat. She is not going to be a happy camper as she has a test tomorrow morning and can't eat after 8 tonite. She is constantly starving! Which means I should be up about 2 a.m. until I take her to the vet as she is relentless about her food! Will NOT stop talking to me and touching my face (gently). So, I am off to feed my girl but you are in my thoughts no matter what I am doing.

Hang in there, sweet guy, this too shall pass! Sending you butterflies from CA. I love you and God Bless You, Josh and Nick's gramma B

Wow, another great day with visitors and people who are becoming physical therapists by proxy. Everyone who visits wants to help Michael with his therapy. We could not do it without everyone's support. The Fants came to visit today and they are great. Fant Kim brought Michael some great gifts from Myrtle Beach. He looks like a tourist with his new shirts, sweats, and sharktooth necklace. Mike's new Funcle Vinnie got up early this morning and built Michael a standing table. WooooooooooW, he is awsome. Melissa, our favorite PT student came and visited Michael. She is going to be a fantastic therapist. We have grown so attached to her. We also had many other family members and friends here with Michael. It has made the ride a lot smoother. What a great community we live in. I will never forget all that people have done for Michael and our family.

Hey Mike Bliss,

It was really nice to watch you sleeping today - You were out of it...kinda like Fant Nik and Fant Kim are all the time. I knew that they would not blog first because they can't start anything without me - they are pathetic. Fant Kim actually surprised me with her nifty little Myrtle gifts - she obviously had help picking them out. I knew that you would be sporting a new pimped out sharks tooth necklace though. It looks fancy on you, fo shizzy. Bling Bling. Get rid of it and just tell her it broke when you see her. I heard that you know Fant Nik's nickname for me...well I have one for her too - it's horsey (short for horses ass) programmed right into the cellie. Well Mike, I'm gonna go catch some z'z like you were earlier.

I'll blog it out tomorrow,

Wow the past 3 days have been much better. Actually, Sunday night the meal Adrienne made (Chicken French) was the best I have ever eaten. We are thinking she should open a restaurant. Michael has been doing lots of exercises on the floor and is amazing in what he can do. Thanks to Vinnie for making the standing table. it is awesome! I missed the Fants coming over last night, but I know that was fun for Michael. I can't even begin to list all the people who have been here the last 5 days. Michael is never alone for one minute. He says he loves it - "It's like Christmas every day." I don't think anyone could ever ask for more support or love. Grandma and I stayed with him last night, and he had a very good night. Today Fant Nikki and Markie came over for a visit. Grandma and Fant Nikki were in the living room folding up a chair when Grandma ended up with a broken nose. I hope the other Fants don't find out about this. We are so blessed with all the love surrouding Michael.

He and his family are wonderful and so helpful along with the staff at the Batavia YMCA. Everyone just wants to help. Good Morning Michael, I just had to get in on the comments about PaPa and his eating habits. He never misses a meal and especially when it's free!! He's lucky he doesn't weigh 300 lbs. His favorite saying "I think I'll just have a little titch of this" He's a riot. Anyway I will be there in 2 weeks and can hardly wait. Have a great time at Jim and Debbie's today. It's beautiful there and there is always a ton of food. Watch Papa enjoy all the goodies. Also ask Papa about all the T-shirts Uncle Bob gives him. It's probably time for a new supply. Enjoy the day and keep up the hard work in all your PT sessions and don't get discouraged. All your hard work will pay off. See ya soon. Love ya.

Mike is at the exercise room and Michael is trying to get caught up on his sleep before he goes to Project Walk at 2PM. Joy and I have had breakfast and gone for a walk. San Diego is beautiful. The flights were good and everything is working out well. Our room is very nice and the hot breakfast buffet is great! Papa, the cookies were good. When Michael gets up and gets ready, we may take a ride to the beach. We understand it is 2 miles from our hotel. It was fun seeing Jerry Lewis on the plane. We are having dinner on Father Wheeland tonight. He stopped over to see Michael yesterday and gave him money for a dinner. Thanks Father! A special thanks to Sherie (Leeann's mom). We are sorry Michael wasn't home when you stopped over on Friday night. We so appreciate everything that everyone has done to make Michael's journey a success. Joy talked to a man at the front desk. He wants to meet Michael and tell him about some success stories that he has seen happen with people who have been a part of Project Walk. Thanks to all of you for making this trip possible for Michael and the family.

Michael, now your strength and endurance will be tested to the utmost. You are the strongest kid I know who will be able to conquer this next chapter in your life. Your family loves you and knows you will go through hurdles. The important thing is truly BELIEVE in everything you do and accomplish (as little or a lot) every day and know it is all happening for reasons (sometimes unknown to us). We have guardian angels watching out for you and you are in the best care. I love you and am so proud of you. Take one day (one moment) at a time. I will read the blogs daily to keep up on your progress. :)

I wanted to take a moment, as I know this is a blog for Michael, for all the readers to know what an inpiration my sister and her family have been to me! We have grown up in a very loving home and as all sisters do, we have our disagreements. But time and miles have taken our relationship a little further than I would have liked. This tragedy in our family has brought us closer and I could not be more proud of Cherri, Mike, Michael, Matthew and Kelsey as I am today. What this family has had to endure would never have been imaginable in the past. Your lives will be changed forever and you are truly better people for having gone through such a tragedy and not let it take you down completely. Families have to stay together in time of needs and times of turmoil. You truly have a bond that we should all be lucky to have. Even though I am 1600 miles away, you are in my daily (hourly) thoughts. I know Michael is strong which will make him more determined to beat this challenge. I love you guys!
Love Always

Well, it sounds like San Diego is going well so far other than the fact that Michael accidently saw one of his grandmothers naked for the first time in his life. He is not so sure he wants to go to the nude beach anymore. Also, there was a hair on the toilet seat in the hotel when they arrived that did not belong to any of them. It made Michael and his father sick , so the grandmothers had to quickly remove it. Thank god the grandmothers are there to help with such tasks.

It sounds like they gave Michael a good workout today. He says he is tired and should sleep good tonight. I guess they really liked In and Out Burger (Thanks Melissa and grandma B for the recommendation). The only problem was the first burger came with mayonaise. Now he knows he has to request no mayonaise. It sounds like they are going to be eating there a lot. As my husband put it, "It was pretty cheap."

Michael's a pin head. Actually he had acupuncture today in his scalp, and the acupunctuist suggested that we leave the pins in for two more hours, so he trained Nurse Nanny on how to take them out. I haven't decided if I will leave them in or take them out. We loved Project Walk. Michael really got his money worth. They worked him so hard, and he was really up to the task. We are so glad that we can be here and watch Michael working so hard, and we are all learning new techniques to help him with his recovery. We are also having some laughs. Do not let yor family convince you not to go to the nude beach, because I'm sure that Mitch is waiting anxiously for your report. You can't let your brother down.

Also, don't listen to anything those YOUNG FOLKS are telling you about naked Grandmas. "EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT", ALL YOU 40'S SOMETHING FOLKS. YOU SHOULD LOOK SO GOOD". To those grandmas, don't be afraid to show yourselves often. After all , you are in California.

I am looking every day at this blog for news of your progress, because I know there will be some good news each day. BELIEVE!!

Love and Hugs, and Fun, Frandma Ger

Hi Michael, OH MY GOD, My mom is talking about naked Grandmas. Michael, you stick with those young babes. Let me know if most of them have fake ones. Iwas thinking California babes are all fake boobs. Well, I kmow Josh will tell me. That might just get you on your feet and running. Nude beaches, here you come!! So glad they are working you hard and making this trip worth everything. If you have a camera phone, send a couple pics. We are thinking of you all the time. I love lots and lots. Hugs and Kisses, Patti

Hi Mike:
Sounds like you have a very busy day today - it'll all be worth it. Personally, I am going to take a nap - Sami Tachin has just informed me that she is sleeping over tonight (her mom said she could, wasn't that so nice of Fant Nik?), so I need to rest before she gets here. She is very high maintenance. Can you understand your acupuncture person? That is most excellent when you know what they're saying. I hate those ones they put in your head - hope it didn't hurt. Maybe you can give me some tips on getting Fant Nik off the phone in 2 minutes and 34 seconds - that would be refreshing. Have a great Day 2!!!! Love ya lots!!! Fant Kim

Just wondering if Fant Kim ever takes 19 year olds over night. He is a little sloppy, while maybe a lot sloppy and likes to tease 8 year olds a lot. What do you think?

I am counting down the hours until therapy. This three hour time change is killing me.

I have tried the hanging up trick. Unfortunately she calls right back and says, "Hey what happened - did we get disconnected? Your phone sucks." Some people just cannot take a hint. I put the dessert recipe on the broken blog, but don't worry, there will be some waiting when you get home. And Cheri, there would have to be an exchange - I have a sloppy 19, 21 or 22 year old available. The 21-year-old is also very skilled at teasing. In fact he teased his 4-year-old cousin so much that he had to buy him a $100 Hummer bike. Let me know which one you want. Oh, hi Michael Bliss - bet you thought I forgot about you!! Love ya lots!!! Well here we are on day 3 of Michael's journey. Another great breakfast buffet! I can't wait for Matthew to get here. I know he will get his money's worth. By the way, for the record, Michael called his mom at 6:42PM yesterday on both her cell phone and the house phone. He did talk to Kelsey, and she told him Cherri was talking to Barb. (We hope Barb is doing well with her recovery after hip surgery. We wish she could be with us for her recuperation. She would get lots of laughs. Laughs are better than tears!) We have the record of these calls on Michael's cell phone. He will call his mom first today after therapy. We can't wait for therapy today. Michael works so hard and is accomplishing so much. I think gramma and I will have to move here, so Michael has a permanent place to stay when he comes out here. Maybe we could do a fund raiser to buy Nanny and Gramma a house in San Diego.

I'm working hard. Project Walk is even better than I would have hoped for. Thanks for all your love and support. I'm even having some time for laughs. San Diego is beautiful. Who wants to come with me the next time? A special kiss and hug to my mom. I can't wait until Monday to see her!

We survived the earthquake.Michael had another good day at rehab. He is learning
how to relax and take deep breaths. It sounds silly, but it helps his tone and spasms. His tone is preventing him from doing more.Michael did his research and I believe he picked the right rehab place.

Mikey I'm so glad to hear that things are going so well. You deserve the best rehab out there and it sounds like you have got it!

"Personal change, growth, development, identity formation—these tasks that once were thought to belong to childhood and adolescence alone now are recognized as part of adult life as well. Gone is the belief that adulthood is, or ought to be, a time of internal peace and comfort, that growing pains belong only to the young; gone the belief that these are marker events—a job, a mate, a child—through which we will pass into a life of relative ease.

Hey Mike,

I was at the gym and saw the breaking news of an earthquake in san diego...what the flip is gramma doing at the dunes? Glad to hear that you are happy with your therapy. Looking forward to see you when you come home and how much you have improved. The fants would be happy to make the next trip, I'm sure. Let us know if you need us - we are like minute woman - we can be ready so fast.

keep working it out,
Love ya,
